Smoking is Dangerous to Your Dating Life and Your Health!

“The Edwardians,” my 16-member entertainment group was in the van, traveling at 65 miles an hour when someone screamed “Gary!” In the rearview mirror I saw scrambling as the van rocked back and forth! I hollered, what’s going on back there. “Oh, nothing” they replied. They settled down as we continued our 4-hour drive to the performance site.

Weeks later while cleaning out the van, I learned what the shouting was about. Gary had been smoking in the back of the van and had dropped his cigarette. It burned a hole in the back seat in my new van.

Smoking is responsible for many consequences besides burning holes in seats, furniture and clothes. When in college, I was told smoking me be look “cool” and sophisticated. So, I continued making smoking part of my lifestyle. Later, I found it was caused shortness of breath when playing basketball, gave my voice a raspy sound when I was singing and unusually “bad breath.” So I quit! What an idiot I was to start in the first place.

Here are a few hazards and drawbacks to smoking I have collected over the years:

Smoking Stinks

Most people don’t like to be around noxious odors. The smoker may not understand that to a non-smoker the smell is very unpleasant, so they try to keep their distance. I learned this from my high school band director. I never wanted to talk to him. I dreaded being called into his office!

- The smell of cigarettes gets into hair, clothing and especially coats since they seldom get washed.

- A mixture of cigarettes and coffee leaves a person with vomit breath.

- Fingers turn yellow and smell bad from holding cigarettes.

- The smell gets into curtains, drapes and carpeting.

Smoking Costs You Big Money

- A pack of cigarettes has risen from $0.35 a pack to between $3 and $10 a pack!

- Cigarettes and ashes can burn holes in personal and borrowed clothes

- Burns holes in a car seats or furniture

- An unattended cigarette can start damaging fires almost anywhere.

Smoking is a Time Waster

- It takes about 5 minutes to smoke a cigarette, another 5 minutes to get to/from the location and 5 minutes to plan when/where/how. Meanwhile, other non-smokers are being productive and getting ahead.

Smoking is Ugly

- Cigarettes can leave painful burns and ugly scars on hands, arms, faces and legs.

- Smoking makes your teeth yellow

- Smoke accumulates on walls and ceilings and turns them yellowish

Smoking also kills the smoker slowly!

The United States Surgeon General warns on every pack of Cigarettes – Smoking is hazardous to your health!

- Heat Disease

- Lung Cancer

- Emphysema

- and others such as Asthma

Be smarter than I was. Smoking isn’t cool. Don’t start! It’s very addictive, ugly, stinks and wastes your time and money! The choice is yours. It’s much easier to just say no to a cigarette offered you, than trying to quit later.

A Natural and Inexpensive Way to Help Keep your Family Healthy

A Health Tip from Diane Edwards – CM, FLMS

Aromatherapy using naturally occurring oils is a fairly new concept to many, but it has been traced back to the time of the ancient Egyptians. Most have heard how Aromatherapy can change our mood. You might be surprised to learn using essential oils has healing properties as well! For example just putting a drop of peppermint oil on the temples and back of neck can relieve a headache.

However, one of my most exciting findings has been to use essential oils to help protect my family from cold and flu symptoms. It’s also great for allergies, sinus infections and any respority illness.

What Are These Oils?

Essential Oils are distilled from plants’ leaves, bark, flowers and stems. These are the most potent aromatic molecules of any plant. These oils have many uses including bath, massage, hair care and even room air fresheners.

One Health Application

I fill a potpourri pot with water. (I purchased an electric one in the craft section at Walmart.) I then put a few drops each of these essential oils: peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, and tee tree oil. (The tea tree oil actually kills bacteria.) I plug this in by the bed where these oils can do their job all night. (I like using the electric potpourri pot, because there are no flames involved that may cause a fire.)

REMEMBER: A little goes a VERY long way, so start with 1 or 2 drops.

For daytime use, you can put a drop of each on a tissue and throughout the day, put it up to your nose and take some deep breaths. This is also good for allergy season.

In addition to the potpourri pot for extra help with a nasty flu or even sinus infection, boil water and put one drop of each in a bowl. Put your head over the bowl with a towel over your head making a tent. Inhale for about 10 minutes. – This should be repeated morning and night – more often if possible. It might take a few days, but you’ll notice a big difference in sinus congestion, throat and lungs.

When our family does this, cold and flu symptoms leave quickly, often never allowing it to turn into a full-blown cold. With the flu, it seems to clear up in just a few days as opposed to a week or more.

Other Essential Oils Uses and Tips

Essential Oils may be purchased in your local health food store or a “Whole Foods” store and can be used as following:

- A few drops in a hot tub to provide a very relaxing bath.

- Put a few drops of oil on ring burners and place them on top of a light bulb. The heat from the bulb will vaporize the oils into the air.

- Instead of using synthetic potpourri’s or spray room fresheners, use essential oils that will scent the air and make any room in your home pleasant.

- I also use a few drops of oil in the water I soak my towels in that I use for facials. It is very refreshing and relaxing to my clients.

More and more people are realizing how important it is to get the artificial preservatives, additives and chemicals out of our lives. Using essential oils is one why of making that change to keep us healthier and happier.

A Guide to Selecting the Proper Size Children’s Shoes from Jim Edwards, Master Shoe Fitter

As a twig is bent, so grows the tree. Ever hear that phrase? In a forest you can see lots of examples of this. Well, surprise! It applies to children’s feet as well!

Parents need to understand that bones in children’s feet are soft and pliable. If a shoe fits badly or is too small, a child’s foot will adapt to it creating long-term problems such as hammer toes, extremely high arches, etc. To allow bones and muscles to form correctly, feet must be free – not “cramped.”

Case #1 . . . The Groom

I encountered a 24-year-old engaged couple looking for wedding shoes. As I measured the groom’s feet, I noticed his toes were arched up. The “Vamp” (area covering the toes) on most shoes wasn’t high enough to accommodate his toes, so he couldn’t fit comfortably in any stylish shoe. It took all my skill and experience to find good-looking shoes that would accommodate his toes.

When I asked him about his arched toes, he said his parents told him they had been like that since he was a toddler. If true, his toes were probably restricted by his baby booties and first baby shoes. This is serious, since he’ll have this deformity/affliction throughout life, created by loving parents who were ignorant (just unaware) of the following information when he was a baby.

Fitting Shoes on Children Comfortably

Here are thoughts that can assist parents purchase shoes for their child without making it a painful experience.

Did you know . . .

As your baby grows there is an amazing change in their feet? There are 3 main growth stages:

- Infant (0 to 2-years-old) – Soft pliable feet, bones not yet connected and arches undeveloped. Feet are wide and appear flat-footed

- Children (ages 3 to 7) – Soft and flexible feet with muscles and arches beginning to be developed. Feet begin to narrow.

- Juniors (8-12) – Still very pressure sensitive as the feet narrow more, but not as much as an adult.

Obviously, as feet continually change shape, it is necessary to check the fit of shoes every couple of months.

You obviously realize . . .

It’s obvious when a toddler’s pants or shirts are too small. But, you can’t see inside a child’s shoes to make certain they have a good fit. Clothes are labeled 6-12 months, 18-24 months etc. make shopping for children’s clothes relatively easy.

To get the right size shoes, however, your fingers need to act like eyes; feeling 13 different places around the shoe to be certain it fits the child comfortably. Sadly, most parents use guesswork. Although I don’t sell children’s shoes regularly, I feel very strongly that trained professionals at shoe stores not only can measure and select more accurately, but actually make it a pleasant experience for the child.

It’s common sense . . .

Children don’t understand how shoes should feel. Frankly, most would rather not have any! Children are unable to put into words (even if they knew) their true feelings about the comfort or discomfort of shoes. Add to that, they may be also intimidated by parents that are shocked at the prices, short-tempered and are just in a hurry to get the shoes.

Case #2 . . . My youngest daughter

“Mom? My foot hurts.”

The dreaded words from our daughter. My wife thought, Oh no! Is it already time to buy her new shoes?

“Let me see your shoes.”

Inspecting the inside of the shoe, my wife discovered, stuck all the way up in the toe, a tiny baby doll’s dress that had been missing for months. Our daughter had been silently in pain all that time.

It’s a good idea to look at your child’s feet and inside their shoes. Watch for blisters, calluses and redness. There can be many things inside the shoe, including torn lining that create soreness of feet including blisters. People in the desert areas know to always look inside shoes before putting them on. This is because scorpions and spiders retreat in them and can sting your foot.

Case #3 . . . My Ingrown Toenail

I wasn’t a very good basketball player in high school, because I was always worried someone would step on my toes. The shoes that I had at one time were too short and I had developed an ingrown toenail on my big toe of each foot. Did I ever tell my parents about my ingrown toenails? No. I was afraid they’d take me to the doctor and he would “dig” it out (pain). Should I have? YES! I dug it out week after week on my own for years. Lesson: Consistently measure your kids feet – Even when they get older. You can really help them!

Choose your priority . . .

The one thing children wear out faster than shoes is . . . parents. – John J. Plomp

We had 4 active children, so know how much it costs to raise them. No one ever told us that kids are expensive. We had to prioritize our expenditures: solid quality shoes were a priority for my wife. (Thank Heaven for mothers!) We could get away spending less on clothes for example, to make the kids had the correct footwear. (There are numerous things most families invest in for their kids that aren’t – long-term – as important as correct footwear. Yes! We know you might be walking through a discount store and your daughter sees those cute little pink jellies. You think, “Aw she’ll out grow them in a couple of months.” What you’re not considering is what kind of permanent damage they can do her feet.

I was always shocked to see what shoes cost, considering they are so little. However, building a shoe for an adult or child takes about the same amount of time and labor. However, while we see prices of gas, tobacco, make-up, alcoholic beverages gradually increase, we’re unprepared for shoe price increase since we so seldom buy them.

One bad move . . .

When buying shoes for children, one of the greatest mistakes is buying shoes from self-service shoe stores or departments. None have properly trained shoe fitters. Therefore, each parent (lovingly) jams their child’s feet into shoes then press the toe to see if it’s “long enough.” This is not as critical for adults, because they know and react immediately if their feet are uncomfortable. However, it is potentially very damaging for children. Why?

Do this when trying on kid’s shoes . . .

When measuring and then trying on children’s shoes, make certain they are standing straight, then make certain the socks are pulled out, so the child’s toes are not constricted. Then you can get accurate measurements and fit for the shoe.

What areas can you check on the child’s shoe . . .

I’ve written a complete guide on how to check shoes for fit on this website. You Can Have Comfortable Shoes – 13 Checkpoints for a Proper Fit – However, for brevity and to avoid redundancy, they are summarized below:

1- Is the shoe long enough? There should be about 1/2” – 5/8” space between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. This is NOT room to grow, but space to allow the toes to spread out, before the shoe narrows.

2- Push down on the “vamp” (front of the shoe). It should allow room and not be tight.

3- Does the back of the shoe rub against and irritate your child’s Achilles tendon?

4- Does the outside or inside rub against the ankle on either side?

5- Can you feel your little toe against the side of your child’s shoe?

6- The metatarsal bone (the big knob at the base of the big toe) should be at the point where the sole slopes to arch.

7- An “arch support” is important. Cheap shoes generally don’t have an arch support.

8- A good firm “heel counter” (back of the shoe) helps lock the foot into the shoe and anchors it to the mid-sole, giving extra support. So, is it solid or floppy? Solid is good, especially if it is made of plastic. Cardboard (a slight denting when pressed, breaks down (if the shoe is not put on properly) and ruins the shoe.

CONCLUDING ADVICE

Shop at stores with experienced shoe sales people who can measure your child’s feet and select styles to best accommodate them. Although there are many famous “style” names of children’s shoes, they have little experience with correct fitting. These build shoes to entice the parents and kids with flashing lights, included comic books, etc. However, I suggest Stride Rite shoes for kids, because their shoes are crafted specifically for the growing child’s feet. They have many “cute” and “manly” styles.

Don’t buy cheap shoes, especially those made from vinyl and plastic! (I personally feel “jellies” are not good for the child’s feet and usually have a stinky smell.) I’d also suggest finding a reputable shoe store or shoe department with seasoned shoe professionals who can work with your children to accurately get their size and fit them into shoes that won’t ruin their feet. If you are pleased with them, I’d stick with them.

There’s usually a reason for the price, including quality leather; a good strong “counter” (back heel); and an arch support with leather inside. There are 240,000 sweat glands on your child’s feet with temperatures reaching 110 degrees. Vinyl and plastic is cheaper, but leather “wicks” away sweat from toes, so doesn’t allow bacteria to create stinky feet nearly as easily.

Surprising Ideas to Get the Most Comfort from Your Shoes

by Jim Edwards, an Experienced Master Shoe Fitter

You’re on a special occasion wearing those ‘new” shoes that are “killing” your feet! (You can’t concentrate.) You just can’t wait for the day to end, so you can get out of your shoes! How did you get such uncomfortable shoes? They FELT and LOOKED comfortable in the store.

Buying shoes is important. It’s not like buying a t-shirt, automobile or TV. Shoes effect foot health, which in turn affects your entire body’s condition. Although shoes are massed produced – your feet aren’t! Each foot has similarities, but many differences. Each determines how comfortable you will be.

As a Master Shoe Fitter I’ve observed 15 common mistakes people make when buying shoes. Recently during a sale, I sold 57 pairs of shoes in a day. Only a handful of people cared about the fit. I wonder how many people will eventually find out the shoes they bought, hurt their feet? Here are some thoughts about how to avoid most shoe-buying mistakes.

1) Buying shoes in the morning. Your feet swell as the day goes by. If you purchase your shoes in the late afternoon or evening, when your feet are most swollen, your shoes should never be too tight. Hint: To assure a good fit, always take along a pair of socks you’d normally wear and put them on to evaluate new shoes. Don’t buy from stores that don’t insist you wear socks or “footies” before trying on shoes. You don’t want to pick up a foot disease.

2) Didn’t take time to try on both shoes. There are 3 reasons why you should:

a) Occasionally, someone puts a wrong-sized shoe in the box.

b) Rarely, there is something very uncomfortable about one of the shoes, i.e. sharp piece of dried glue, a nail, a wire or the insole is cut, bent or twisted.

c) Finally and very rarely, the manufacturer or distributor could mislabel the shoes. Therefore, always try on both shoes!

3) Not being able to return uncomfortable shoes. Before buying, ask your salesman if they allow returns for full cash refund! – Then verify it from the store. This can usually be found on the back of a receipt. A) Will the store allow return of shoes if they are in new condition? B) How long do you have to return them? If they won’t allow a return, if becomes a gamble. I’m not a gambler, so wouldn’t buy from that store.

4) Not trying out your shoes before venturing out to an important event. Wear your new shoes on carpet at home for an hour or so before venturing out of the house. You can’t return shoes that you’ve worn or ruined, so first make certain they’re comfortable.

5) Buying vinyl or plastic shoes. Feet have 250,000 sweat glands on each foot. This is more than on any part of the body. Up to ½-pint of sweat is produced daily. Some medical people call feet “the third kidney. So, where does all this water go? Since temperatures reach 110 degrees in the shoe, it’s like a Central American jungle. Fungus and bacteria will grow in this friendly environment.

Vinyl and Plastic uppers and/or insoles allow water to “pool up” in your shoes. Leather on the other hand absorbs and allows the water to spread out or “wick” in every direction. It then allows faster evaporation. Buy shoes that have only leather uppers and insoles (foot bed liners). They breathe better, last longer and look better. They also can be polished, rejuvenated and repaired more easily. Shoes will smell “fresher” after you have worn them repeatedly.

6) Buying shoes based on price. My wife bought a cheap ivory shoe to match her outfit. Because the shoes “killed” her feet, she never wanted to wear her beautiful outfit. Finally, she threw them away. It cost her not only the price of the shoes and much discomfort, but the price of the not being able to wear her outfit. Without comfort, many people can’t even think straight!

(Conversely when I tried to buy a “work boot,” (understanding the importance of good footwear), I decided not to let price stand in the way. However, every expensive boot I tried on really hurt my feet. I finally bought a pair that was the least expensive. Why? Because they were the most comfortable.)

Don’t make your decision based on price – high or low! Shoe price should never be your #1 priority.

I like this analogy I once found:

Quality

Is like buying oats. If you want nice, clean, fresh oats you must pay a fair price. However, if you can be satisfied with oats that have already been through the horse, well that . . .

Comes a Little Cheaper!

7) Considering all shoes measure the same. Buying athletic shoes? Remember, Nikes run 1 size too small. Normally wear a 9? Try on a 10! If you’re used to wearing Nikes and need to buy a dress shoe, the size you’ll need will be 1 size smaller. Wear size 9 Nikes? A size 8 standard shoe should fit well.

8) Buying from a self-service shoe store or self-service shoe department. Don’t buy from a self-service shoe store. I often hear buyers say they want to buy a “cheaper” shoe. CHEAPER is seldom good. It implies poor quality. I have yet to find a self-service shoe store or department store that has anything but lower-priced, poorer-quality shoes. With no supervision, customers without socks may try on shoes leading to the possibility of spreading foot disease. Finally, there’s no shoe expert to measure feet or give advice on shoe quality/durability. Buy from a good shoe retailer to make certain shoes fit well and keep feet healthy.

9) Buying Shoes On Line. Each individual shoe is different and may run small, narrow, wide, long, etc. The price may be a little lower, but you don’t get to try on the shoes, nor make fitting comparisons. You cannot take advantage of a shoe expert who knows shoe/foot idiosyncrasies to give you solid advice. Purchase from a good shoe retailer making certain shoes fit well to will keep your feet healthy.

(Don’t be a “cheapskate” having a shoe salesman fit your foot, then buying the shoe on line to save $5. You’re better than that! How would you feel if someone pumped you for information, then bought from someplace cheaper. Everyone’s knowledge is worth a few $$ if it helps you.)

10- Choosing style over comfort. This leads to bunions, hammer toes, corns and calluses. I’ve had a number of ladies ask me if I had a certain stylish shoe in anything between a 6 and an 8! That’s 2/3 of an inch difference! Those shoes will be uncomfortable and do damage to their feet! Make the decision to buy only shoes that fit your feet and are comfortable.

11- Sending your wife to buy your new shoes. Would your wife ever send you? NNNNNNOOOOOOO! You don’t know what would match her outfit. Well, guess what? She doesn’t know what fits your foot without you trying them on. Buy your shoes in person so you can make certain they fit!

12- Settling for a regular width shoe when you have a wide foot. Customers with wide feet may demand a shoe that is unavailable in wide. When they try to jam their foot into it, they experience little comfort. However, as soon as I place a wide with shoe on their foot, there’s usually a sigh of relief. If you have a wide foot, buy shoes available in wide widths. If the shoe you desire doesn’t come in a wide width, seek another shoe elsewhere. You’re only other choice is to try a larger size.

13- Selecting a size based on length only. Many shoppers purchase shoes on the basis of length only. They press on the toes, or say “Are your toes touching?” - “Do you have enough toe room?” There are at least 12 other key shoe fitting factors. (About the width of a thumb between the end of the longest toe and the end of the shoe is correct.) Don’t be in such a hurry to buy any low-priced shoe. Again, purchase from reputable skilled retailers who know their product and properly fit shoes.

14- Buying shoes only with a mirror shine. We take up to 4,000 steps daily, so shoes must flex that same amount of times as well. Shoes with hard surfaces that can be shined with a mirror finish, often crack and break on the vamp (portion covering the toe joint). After being worn just a few times, the vamp area can become downright ugly. Get over the shine requirement and purchase on comfort and durability!

15- Buying Used Shoes. When worn, shoes take a pounding (up to 4000 steps a day). Since everyone’s feet are slightly different, the former wearer’s foot pattern has been pressed into the shoe’s sole and insole. Your feet will not fit into that same exact wear pattern. This will cause foot pain. Also, you don’t want to get any foot disease the former owner might have had. Frankly, I wouldn’t use anyone else’s toothbrush, underwear or wear their shoes. My advice – Don’t buy used shoes.

Finally,

Shaquille O’Neill wears a size 22 or 24! However, his great size has made him wildly successful and rich. He has to pay big money for his shoes. If you’re a very special person with an unusual sized foot (undersized or oversized) find shoe outlets that cater to your size and support them, so they stay in business! I understand this is difficult for you, but each of us have our own idiosyncrasies, that we need to accommodate. Men with extra long arms pay more for shirts. Some of us need glasses which is a major expense. Men with extra-short legs pay more to have regular sizes tailored. My advice? Embrace your size, then budget for it. Never cheat yourself with poor quality.

Here’s a rule of thumb: Even if shoes are for style, they should fit comfortably. If they don’t you’ll be in pain and eventually get corns, calluses or bunions.

13 Checkpoints for a Proper Fit from Jim Edwards, Master Shoe Fitter

John said; “My feet are always hurting me. What do you have on sale in a 10-1/2?”

“Would you mind if I measured your feet?” I asked.

“You don’t need to, ‘cause I’ve always worn a 10-1/2. But if it makes you happy, go ahead.”

I had John step onto the “Brannock Device.” Wow! His foot measured only 8-1/2. So, I quickly found a pair of 8-1/2 on-sale shoes and slipped them on his feet.

“Ohhhhhh, these feel gooooood” he exclaimed!

“Are you sure you’re comfortable? I asked.”

“Oh, yes” he replied. ”These are excellent! What size are they?”

Case #1 - John’s feet had been hurting him for 15 years. (Somehow he had gotten the idea 10-1/2 was his size.) To save money he always bought shoes at self-service shoe stores that didn’t correct the misnomer – after all they’re just a box store. By simply measuring his feet his whole outlook on life changed. Now, his feet are pain free!

As a Master Shoe Fitter, I daily encounter feet after year of being forced into improper footwear. You’d be amazed how common foot problems are: “hammer toes,” bunions, ingrown toenails, corns, etc. Sadly, those with damaged feet often try to hide them, never wearing open-toed shoes or sandals. When measuring feet, I get to see their problems, so can suggest shoes that best accommodate the client’s feet! It saves them time while allowing a better selection shoes that are comfortable.

It’s becoming extremely difficult to find experienced shoe salesmen who care more about foot comfort than making a sale. Here are 13 vital checkpoints with suggestions to help determine if a shoe fits properly. (These are especially important to know if you are fitting a child’s foot.)

1) Overall Length. Using a Brannock device, measure foot length to the longest toe while standing with weight on the foot. (20% of all people have the 2nd toe that’s the longest, while in 5%, the 3rd toe.) Proper shoe length should allow about the width of a thumb between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. This is NOT room to grow, but space to allow the toes to spread out, before the shoe narrows.

Often, wrinkles directly under the inside arch will shoe if the shoe is too short. Tip: To assure proper fit put on socks similar to those you usually wear.

What’s the length difference between any size and a half size larger? Only 1/6th of an inch. Full size? 1/3rd”. As the size gets bigger, so does the width – 1/8”. Tip: Occasionally, one can select a half size larger to accommodate a wider foot.

2) Measure the Heel to (inner) Ball Length. The Brannock device also measures feet 2 more ways. The second identifies the Heel-to-Ball length using a separate grid. The longer of the 2 measurements (overall vs. heel-to-ball length) identifies the proper size. In most cases if the overall length is 8, but the Ball to Heel measurement is 9, the larger size (9) will be most comfortable. (If a size 8 shoe doesn’t feel right, try a 9 or 8-1/2.)

Case #2 - Toby, his wife and 3 kids stopped in for a pair of athletic shoes, quickly asking for a size 12. I measured his foot. It was a 12, BUT the “Ball to Heel” length was a 13! After I told him about the 13s, he stated, “No, I’m a 12.” (I brought out both sizes anyway.) As soon as he tried on the 12s, he said, “they don’t feel right under my arch. Thanks anyway,” as he prepared to leave. ”His wife said, “why not try on the 13s?” Reluctantly, he agreed. As quickly as they were on his feet, his attitude changed. “These are great. I’ll take ‘em!” What an amazing 30-second turnaround!

3) Measure the Width. It’s just as important as length! The Brannock device also measures width. Some feet are noticeably wide – others deceptively massive even though they don’t measure wide. But if you suspect the foot is wide, try on a wide shoe. You may be pleasantly surprised! However, if it slips sideways on the foot, go back to the regular width shoe. (Nothing ventured; nothing gained – or lost.)

Don’t make a decision on a shoe without standing. The width across the foot can expand over ½ “. Some think a snug fit is necessary, because the shoe will stretch with wear. THIS IS A MYTH! Shoes don’t stretch unless pressure is put on them by the foot. Wearing tight shoes is the cause of hammer toes, corns, in-grown toenails and other maladies. Shoes should be comfortable from the moment you put them on! Yes, a shoe will stretch if it’s too tight, but not only will it hurt, now, but cause foot problems later!

4) Find the Little Toe – You should be able to feel it on the outside of the shoe. If you can’t, it’s overlapping the 4th toe. Therefore, the shoe is too narrow and a bad fit. This is especially important on children’s feet.

5) Feel the 1st Metatarsal Bone (over the Ball of the Foot) – Unless it is just in front of the point where the sole begins to narrow (just in front of the “Arch Support”), the shoe won’t fit right. The “ball” should fit into the shoe’s deepest part (socket).

6) Feel the 5th Metatarsal (over the Outer Ball) – This is at the widest part of the foot. Unless this outer ball fits into its “pocket,” the shoe won’t flex properly.

7) Check the Vamp – This is the top of the shoe over your toes. Do excessive wrinkles or folds form here after a few steps are taken? If so, the shoe is too long or too narrow. Another test is to push down on the vamp to make certain there’s a little extra room. No “give?” The shoes are too narrow or short.

Occasionally, customers decide to tryout the shoe with wild unnatural bending. This actually ruins the shoe, making it impossible to sell to anyone else. This is unnecessary and inconsiderate. Walk in the shoe as you would normally. If you feel a pinch, it’s the wrong shoe or size. Don’t ruin a $150 pair of shoes with strange antics.

8) Be Certain the Throat Line Clears the Anklebone on Both Sides – The entrance that your foot makes into a shoe is called the throat line. After the foot is settled into the shoe, neither side should bite into the ankle bone. (A remedy can be to put a heel pad or foot pad into the shoe. This can raise the ankle bone above the irritating “throat line”.)

Case #3 - I bought a shoe that at 1st blush was comfortable, looked great and priced right. Later I found out it “bit” into my ankle. The shoe is almost 10-years-old now and still looks great. But I’ve only worn it 10 times. It’s just too painful. I learned a costly and painful lesson!

9) Check the Topline – Look again at the “throat line” as the person is walking. It should hug the foot. If it gapes open or is excessively loose, it’s usually due to the person’s extra-wide heel, a too-narrow fit or flat feet.

10) Look at the Back of the Heel – If the shoe is too big, a gap will be evident and the shoe will slide on the heel. Also, make certain it doesn’t bite into the heel’s tendon. This will cause a blister and later a callous.

11) Check the “Cuboid” – This is the knob protruding on the foot’s outer side, halfway between the heel and the little toe. On some people the “cuboid” protrudes more and can be a source of irritation by a shoe that’s too narrow.

12) Arch Support – The arch is midway between heel and toes. It needs to be supported by a raised portion of the shoe. Question: Does the shoe even have one? It’s important to have a support under the arch, if you are expecting to be comfortable for long periods of time. The lack of an arch support is why “Tuxedo Shoes” and flip-flops are sooooo uncomfortable. This allows the arch to flatten out putting stress on ankles, knees, back and feet. (Pay for a good shoe now or pay a Chiropractor, Osteopath and/or Podiatrist later since you will be enduring lots of pain.)

13) Check the Lace Rows on Oxfords (shoes with laces). When laced both sides should be parallel between the eye holes on “Blucher” designs and form a slim “V” on a “Bal” (Balmoral) design.

Because there are so many variations to an individual’s feet, I recommend seasoned shoe professionals. It’s important to know that fitting feet properly in shoes is not an exact science, but more of an art.

How to Avoid Split Ends and the Frizzies – Facts from a Cosmetologist

Lets’ face it girls – Our hair is critical to our overall looks. If our hair looks bad, we look bad, which of course makes us feel bad! We all have an occasional “bad-hair day” due to hormones, humidity, rain, etc. However, this article is about is over-processed, split ends and “frizzies” best known as damaged hair!

How do we keep from damaging our hair or if we have to, how do we fix it?

As a cosmetologist, my job is to not only to create great looking hair, but to help my clients maintain their beautiful hair between appointments.

Let me explain what “damaged hair” actually is. A strand of hair has two main parts that we will talk about; the outer layer, called the “cuticle,” and beneath it, the “cortex”. The cuticle is much like shingles on a roof. When the hair receives any chemical process such as color, the cuticle softens and swells up so the color can reach the cortex where the process takes place. When the process is finished, the cuticle lies back down and locks in the color. If hair is damaged, the cuticle won’t lay down, causing that “frizzie, split-end” look.

What Causes Damage to Hair

1. Using mass-market, discount store product. This includes boxed hair color, shampoos, hair sprays, mousses, etc. A hair stylist knows what’s best for your hair (considering you have a good stylist). Yes, it costs more, but we’re talking about your hair, remember? Not everyone’s hair is the same! Your stylist can recommend products for your specific hair type that will help keep your hair in good condition. Listen to them – they aren’t just blowing smoke! They’re doing it for your benefit – not theirs!

Yes, salon products cost more than store products, but there are very good reasons. Store products are watered down – you have to use more. Next, they are loaded with detergents that actually strip your hair of color and dry it out. Finally, most salon product makers, such as Paul Mitchell, Keune, Tiji, Redken, etc. have been in the industry for years. They know what needs to go into these products to keep the hair looking great.

Remember, just because the package at your favorite store is pretty, with ads promising you the world, doesn’t mean they deliver. So – - – listen to your stylist!

2. Blow drying, flat irons and curling irons are all very hard on your hair. For some of us they are a necessity. In addition to using good shampoos, conditioners, mousses, etc, I suggest a thermal “protectant” on your hair. I find that sprays are easy. Just lightly spray on a section of the hair before using your flat iron or curling iron. This will help protect the hair from drying out. If you can wash your hair every two or three days instead of daily, that will also help.

3. All chemical process such as color, perms or straightening the hair. These are very hard on the hair since it causes the cuticle to rise up. Knowing how to get the cuticle to lie back down is a key skill your stylist has been trained to do. Again, you must have a stylist that is good at what he/she does. Using good color products and proper after color shampoos that will be gentle, yet effective on the hair are important.

Key: The stronger the smell, the stronger the product. I’ve had stylists put hair color on me that was so strong, I could hardly breathe! This was extremely harsh to my hair. So, let your nose tell you if your stylist is trying to save money by using inexpensive harsh products or if they are looking out for your best interest.

4. The sun and chlorine. The sun plays a factor in your hair condition. The sun is really hard on your hair especially in the summer. It will fade color and dry the hair out. Chlorine is very drying too. Try to wear a hat if you are in the sun for long periods of time. (Again, if your stylist is using a good color line, it shouldn’t fade as fast).

Key: Remember, you cannot repair damaged hair! If a product promises that – it’s simply not true! However, there are deep conditioners that will help the hair “look” better until the damage is grown out.

Getting Back on the Road to Healthy Hair

Step 1: Cut your hair every 6 weeks. You may have to cut it shorter than you like initially. If you don’t want to do that, at least get your hair trimmed every 6 weeks.

Step 2: Use quality products that have protein in them. Since your hair is made of protein, it makes sense to use products with protein in them. There are protein sprays or protein repair conditioners that work really well. They will help strengthen the hair so it won’t damage as easily.

Step 3: Don’t forget to eat healthy! Diet is SO important. Eating healthy is important for all aspect your health. What goes in your body will show up on the outside of your body – your skin, eyes and yes your hair. If you are healthy, your hair will be healthy. Of course what goes hand in hand with diet is exercise. Just walking a mile 4 times a week will benefit you greatly. If you don’t invest in yourself, no one else will!

Finally, I hope this has cleared up any myths you have heard about damaged hair. A little time an effort on your hair will keep it good condition. I know it’s impossible to follow all these steps perfectly all the time. However, if you begin to put these tips into practice, you’ll be back on the road to healthy, beautiful hair.

The plain truth is that when I was a child, I ate lots of candy and didn’t brush my teeth as often as my parents instructed me. So at age 47, I paid for the folly of my youth – at the dentist.

I had the finest, most caring dentist anywhere, Dr. Art Siml, an efficient, excellent workman. He decided to cap 3 teeth and add a bridge to my mouth. He’d assure the job was done properly with a goal to have these new teeth last 20 years plus. Since his office was in suburban Chicago, and I’d have to drive from St. Louis, he scheduled to finish the job in only 2 appointments.

Frankly, the first visit was a breeze. I received a Novocain shot, he prepared my teeth quickly and efficiently, putting 3 temporary caps put on my teeth. This was not a pleasant experience by any means, but it saved me a great deal of pain. The second visit, however, was something else.

Upon entering the doctor’s office, I was told I wouldn’t need a shot since he wouldn’t be drilling. After I positioned myself in the dentist’s chair, he began. With his cold metal pick he removed the 3 caps, sending me nearly through the ceiling. He then proceeded to scrape the excess cement off each of these teeth. Oooooooooh Boy!

His next step was to meticulously prepare the teeth, so the caps would stay in place at least for the next 20 years. Then Dr. Siml said the famous “I need to dry your teeth off just a little” line! “It will only be ‘till the count of three.”

Now, Art is extremely honest. But, I think he has real problems counting. He aimed the jet of cold air and began counting “w-w-w-w-w-w-w-one, t-t-t-t-t- – - – - -two, (pause) (pause) (pause) threeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, and just a little more.” Well, I cannot truly explain the sensation I felt.

During those moments that felt like an eternity, I understood a real truth. This world is imperfect, so we’ve gotten into some horrible situations. God will lead us through them, but it may make us uncomfortable for a season. However in the long run, His guidance (like the Dentist’s) will save us from far worse pain and suffering!

Romans 8:28 says; And we know that ALL things work together for GOOD to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

But can I really trust God? Here’s what He said about Himself: For He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you, nor give you up, nor leave you without support. I will not, I will not, I WILL NOT in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let you down [relax My hold on you.] Assuredly NOT! Hebrews 13:5c Amplified Bible

He also said:

For I am the Lord, I do not change – Malachi 3:6

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. – Hebrews 13:8

But the Word of the Lord endures forever. – I Peter 1:25

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. – James 1:17

Like the dentist, God didn’t cause my problems. But there’s proof, he’ll solve them. But just like trusting the dentist, we need to put our complete trust in Him. A short time of discomfort will result in long-term peace in Him.

Tips from Jim Edwards – Master Shoe Fitter

Reduce Foot Odor and Increase Comfort (So why do feet smell and noses run?)

Conditions inside shoes can be as hot and humid as a jungle. Feet release as much as ½ pint of perspiration per day and temperatures reach 110º F. (Some doctors refer to the feet as the 3rd kidney.) These conditions promote the growth of odor-causing bacteria and molds, contributing not just to odor – but foot disease. Here are 11 keys to increasing foot comfort while keeping your feet fresh**.

11 Ideas to Keep Shoes Smelling “Fresh” and Increase Shoe Life

WASH FEET DAILY thoroughly with soap. Key: scrubbing kills odor-causing bacteria.

WEAR SOCKS! CHANGE ‘EM DAILY, washing them in a detergent to kill bacteria. (Socks protect a shoe’s inner sole from dirt and the accumulation of old skin.)

ROUTINELY CLEAN, SCRUB, AND BRUSH UNDER TOENAILS. This is where soap scum and old skin accumulate, then compact allowing odor-causing bacteria to hide and grow.

AVOID WEARING THE SAME PAIR OF SHOES TWO DAYS IN A ROW. Time is needed to allow perspiration to evaporate and shoes to recover. Shoe life will more than double.

For leather shoes INSTALL CEDAR SHOE TREES IMMEDIATELY AFTER WEARING. Not only keeping the front (vamp) of your shoe smooth, they soak up excess moisture, acids and salts. (When the shoe trees lose their freshness, their scent can be rejuvenated by sanding lightly with very fine, 100-grit sandpaper.)

PURCHASE SHOES WITH LEATHER LININGS rather than with less costly fabric. Leather “wicks” away moisture better. Leather-lined shoes cost a little more, but are well worth it. When inner soles lose their freshness, considering purchasing new inner soles.

LOOK FOR SHOES WITH VENT HOLES ON THE INNER SOLE allowing perspiration to evaporate. Some inner soles even have anti-bacterial composition on the underside to keep odor in check.

FOR PERSISTENT ODOR – TRY A FOOT SPRAY OR POWDER WITH THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT 1% TOLNAFTATE commonly found in the foot-care section of drug stores, pharmacies, supermarkets and discount department stores. Also look for Lotrimin with a 1% solution of Clotrimazole for an effective “athlete’s foot” treatment.

ODOR-DESTROYING INSOLES such as “Dr. Scholl’s Super Sports” or “Odor Eaters”, can continue to halt bacteria growth. They should be changed at least every six months. These may be found in drug stores, drug departments of supermarkets and/or discount department stores.

THICKENED TOENAILS USUALLY INDICATE PRESENCE OF A FUNGUS NEEDING TREATMENT. An over-the-counter product with 25% Undecylenic Acid may be chosen. A less costly treatment is Tea-Tree Oil (available at many health-food and discount department stores). Apply this directly to the nails. Finally, soaking feet for 15 minutes in a ½ cup of peroxide and ½ cup Epson salts solution also kills bacteria. (This is a great time to trim nails as they are soft and pliable.)

TO RESTORE BALANCE IN YOUR “GOOD BACTERIA” TAKE ACIDOPHILUS. Each foot has tens of thousands of sweat glands, heat and high humidity, so invite “yeast” infections. This stems from stress and/or improper eating habits (over indulgence in sugar, white flour, alcoholic beverages, etc. It’s available at health-food stores.

**While researched in depth, these ideas are meant as a guide only. Author accepts no responsibility for adverse effects (rashes, allergic reaction or other negative reaction). For proper solution or persistent foot odor problems – consult your physician.
