Key Scriptures in the Old Testament – # 5
Written in the 8th century B.C., Isaiah is packed with prophecy of the coming Messiah ( chapters 9, 42, 49, 52, 53, & 61). They provide amazingly accurate depictions of Jesus. Also tucked inside Isaiah are shorter, but wonderful scriptures for exhortation, edification and comfort. For the layman like me, they can be difficult to find. Here are a few I’ve chosen to highlight in my Bible in order as they appear.
As one finds each of these and any other independent scriptures, it is important to read the verses before and after to get their full context, whom it’s written to, etc.
Isaiah 1:18-19 – God wants to have a closer relationship with everyone.
“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the Lord, “ Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be white as snow; though they are red like crimson; They shall be as wool.IF you are willing and obedient, You SHALL eat the good of the land; BUT if you refuse and rebel; You SHALL be devoured by the sword;” for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. (Also see Isaiah 43:25-26)
Isaiah 2:4 – Beating Swords into Plowshares – famous quote
He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.
Isaiah 8:19 – Communicating with the Dead? NO!
. . Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter, should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?
Isaiah 14:12-23 – Who is Satan and what was his Sin?
“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! . . You have weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: I will . . I will . . I will . . I will . . I will . . Want a further description? Go to Ezekiel 28:12-19
Isaiah 21:10 – This message was Directly from God thru’ Isaiah to You.
“that which I have heard from the Lord of hosts, The God of Israel, I have declared to you.
Isaiah 22:18-19 – Famous Quote but ill-advised
“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”
Isaiah 26:3-4 – What to do when Worried
You (God) will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever . . the Lord is everlasting strength.
Isaiah 28:7-8 – Warning about Religious Minister/Priests Getting Drunk
But they also have erred through wine, And through intoxicating drink are out of the way; The priest and the prophet have erred through intoxicating drink, They are swallowed up by wine, They are out of the way through intoxicating drink; They err in vision, they stumble in judgment. For all tables are full of vomit and filth; No place is clean.
Isaiah 40:22 – The Earth is Round – 8th Century B.C.
It is He who sits above the circle of the earth. During the Middle Ages it was thought one could fall off the edge of the earth. Sadly, they hadn’t read the Old Testament. (This is also stated in Proverbs 8:27 and Job 22:14 dating back to at least the 15th Century B.C.)
Isaiah 40:31 – Need help from God?
“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 41:4a; 43:10; 44:6b – There is only 1 God!
“I, the Lord, am the first; and with the last, I am He.” – And understand that I am he. Before me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me. I even I am the Lord. . I am the First and I am the last; Besides Me there is no God.
Isaiah 48:17b – Want to be Rich and Avoid the Dishonest?
I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way you should go.
Isaiah 48:22 – What do evil people gain?
“There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.” No God, No Peace – Know God Know Peace.
Isaiah 53:5 – Jesus Healed You!
And by his stripes we ARE healed. Compare to II Peter 2:24c – by whose stripes you WERE healed.
Isaiah 54:17 – What God’s Servants Inherit
“No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me” Says the Lord.
Isaiah 55:11 – God’s Word Always Works
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 66:24 – What’s ahead for Evil people
. . says the Lord. “And they shall go forth and look upon the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me. For their worm does not die, And their fire is not quenched. They shall be abhorrence to all flesh.” (There are more depictions of Hell in 30:33 and 38:18.)
I am almost embarrassed to publish this, because there is so much more in the Book of Isaiah. However, this a good starting point for your study of this very prophetic work. A friend of mine won’t ever mark anything in his Bible. I encourage you to mark in your Bible freely, so you can find just the right promise from God for your needs.
