Shoe Size Conversion from USA to Metric

Tips from Jim Edwards – Master Shoe Fitter

In a rush the man pleaded “Do you have a size 7 black dress shoe? I’m on my way to my wedding!” Since ECCO lists on their box that a size 41 converts to a 7.0-7.5 I replied, “of course I do”. ECCO’s box lied! His foot swam inside the shoe.

Foreign-owned shoe marketers maximize shoe profit in the US by not producing narrows or wides, then try to justify the lack of sizes, “claiming” their shoe is perfect for all sized feet. Don’t you believe it! So here’s a table for more realistic shoe conversion from European to U.S. standards?

To convert a US shoe size to United Kingdom standard, simply take the size and reduce it one whole number. (Example, US 10 would be a UK 9.)
Remember, Men’s normal width is usually a “D”. Women’s feet are often more narrow, so their shoe reflect a “B” width. Women who have unusually wide feet are often quite happy with a man’s size IF the style is suitable for their tastes.
