Shoe Size Guide Converts USA to Metric to British
Tips from Jim Edwards – Master Shoe Fitter
In a rush the man pleaded “Do you have a size 7 black dress shoe? I’m on my way to my wedding!” Since ECCO lists on their box that a size 41 converts to a 7.0-7.5 I replied, “of course I do”. ECCO’s box lied! His foot swam inside the shoe. It was actually a size 8. I then learned that a size 42 was really an 8-1/2 to 9 instead of the marking indicating 8 to 8-1/2.
Foreign-owned shoe marketers maximize shoe profit in the US by not producing narrows, wides or half sizes. Next they try to justify the lack of sizes, “claiming” their shoe is perfect for all sized feet. Don’t you believe it! Here’s a table for more realistic shoe conversion from European to U.S. standards?

To convert a US shoe size to United Kingdom standard, simply take the size and reduce it one whole number. (Example, US 10 would be a UK 9.)
Additional Tips and Shoe Size Guide Info
Remember, Men’s normal width is usually a “D”. Women’s feet are often more narrow, so their shoe reflect a “B” width. Women who have unusually wide feet are often quite happy with a man’s size IF the style is suitable for their tastes.
This Shoe Size Guide is meant to help you more quickly determine the size you require. However, I always recommend you try the shoes on before purchasing. It’s easy to purchase underwear, socks and other high volume items on line. However, there are a number of things I have found inside shoes before I let my customers trwhy them on.
1) Sharp piece of dried glue which would have cut the customer’s foot.
2) Insole curled making the shoe very uncomfortable. I just put in an unusable pile.
3) A shoe nail sticking down from the top of the vamp. This would have torn up a foot like a fish hook.
At a reputable shoe store you can not only get your feet measured properly, but the shoe fitter can analyze your foot making allowances for any potential foot problems as well as assure that the shoe is comfortable.
Remember, if the shoe is uncomfortable – Don’t Buy It!
